The answer to recognize the one which is coming from John the Baptist who prepared the way of the Lord with his whole being. When Jesus appeared, John the Baptist talked to his disciples, “Behold, the lamb of God.” This is the direct command to see the lamb of God, not a privileged one, a military leader, or a pious one. The lamb of God is the one we have not recognized because it seems so small, trivial, weak, comparing to the powers in the world. Totally new, this utter newness is among us, challenging us to change our views and ultimately our way of life. This is not just given but somehow challenging because we are suffering to be led to see the light in the darkness. That’s why the word crisis makes a sense to endure a danger, embracing an opportunity to be transformed from self-centeredness to God-centeredness.
Therefore, Advent should be awakening of our old self and challenging us to be renewed by our action. For instance, when many are constrained financially this year, Advent gifts are especially appropriate. They cost nothing but an open and giving spirit. If you extend forgiveness to someone you have held bound with resentment, it can be like clothing them with a robe of salvation, or wrapping both of you in a mantle of justice, as you accept God’s saving work of reconciliation in your lives. This is an extravagant gift—one more valuable than a bridegroom’s diadem or a bride’s jewels.
And there is also the Advent practice for all of us, as St. Paul urges: “Test everything; retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil.” Along with these, we must rejoice first and pray without ceasing and give thanks to God who always send a helper for us in the midst of suffering.
Above all, we are here to be a part of the Eucharistic table where the lamb of God will be our food to strengthen us, to give us unfailing hope. “Behold, the lamb of God!” I don’t know any other god who became a mere creature to be crucified, who gives himself to be eaten, and who takes away the sins of the world. So let us rejoice always. The Lamb of God will make justice and praise spring up before all the nations.
